Programme Director - Dr Savvas Papasavvas, FRCS, FRCEM - EM Consultant, Masters in Trauma Surgery & Post Graduate Certification In Medical Education.

Mr Papasavvas is a senior Emergency Medicine consultant at in a London Foundation Trust. With a foundation in surgical training and a Master’s in Trauma Surgery from the University of Birmingham, he has over two decades of experience in Emergency and Paediatric Emergency Medicine. 

He was awarded FRCS (Glasgow) in 1996 and FCEM in 2000. 

His clinical leadership has contributed to the transformation of Emergency Departments across several trusts, improving both patient care and departmental performance. He is actively involved in trauma education, clinical governance, and simulation-based training. Holding a postgraduate certificate in Medical Education, he remains committed to mentoring and developing the next generation of emergency physicians.

Course Objectives

  • Critically evaluate the global and UK burden of trauma and its impact on patients, families, and healthcare systems.
  • Analyse the role of trauma education and prevention strategies in reducing morbidity and mortality.
  • Explain the anatomical and radiological principles essential for trauma assessment and management.
  • Critically assess the stepwise approach to trauma patient evaluation and stabilisation.
  • Compare and contrast trauma management across different patient groups, including paediatric, elderly, and pregnant patients.
  • Analyse the principles of managing polytrauma and multisystem injuries.
  • Evaluate common regional injuries, including head, cervical spine, thoracic, abdominal, musculoskeletal, and long bone trauma.
  • Appreciate the importance of early recognition and management of minor but high-impact injuries.
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of healthcare professionals in acute trauma care.
  • Apply evidence-based principles to optimise decision-making in trauma management.

Programme Delivery

The programme comprises a total of 125 hours of study, including 50 hours of consultant-led learning and 75 hours of self-directed learning, delivered through a blended learning model combining online and face-to-face sessions.

  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge of trauma anatomy and its relevance to clinical assessment.
  • Evaluate the role of radiology, including X-rays, in trauma assessment.
  • Compare and contrast regional trauma presentations, including cranial, spinal, thoracic, abdominal, and extremity injuries.
  • Explain the initial assessment and management of head, cervical spine, thoracic, abdominal, and musculoskeletal trauma.
  • Appraise the unique considerations in paediatric, elderly, and obstetric trauma care.
  • Understand principles of polytrauma management and stepwise resuscitation.
  • Manage minor but potentially serious injuries, such as foreign bodies, nerve injuries, and ocular trauma.
  • Appreciate the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork in acute trauma care.

Hands-On Skills & Practical Competencies

Learners will develop and demonstrate essential trauma care skills, assessed against documented criteria:

Airway & Breathing Management

  • Demonstrate airway protection techniques in patients with suspected C-spine injury.
  • Safely apply airway adjuncts and provide basic ventilatory support.

Initial Trauma Assessment

  • Perform the ABC approach in polytrauma assessment.
  • Conduct a structured primary survey for rapid patient stabilisation.
  • Implement a comprehensive secondary survey to identify associated injuries.

Trauma Interventions

  • Perform safe and effective log roll techniques for spinal assessment.
  • Insert a chest drain in a simulated environment.
  • Administer a haematoma block for pain control.
  • Safely manipulate wrist fractures.
  • Relocate shoulder dislocations under simulated conditions.

Teamwork & Clinical Application

  • Prioritise patient care accurately during trauma scenarios.
  • Apply evidence-based protocols in high-pressure, simulated settings.
  • Critically justify the sequence of interventions for polytrauma patients.
